The ECEMF Research Policy Workshop for the Western Balkans convened on November 24, 2023, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and online. This event gathered policymakers, researchers, NGOs, private sector representatives and modelling experts to discuss climate and energy policy within the region. The workshop underscored the necessity of enhancing modelling capacities to facilitate sustainable energy transitions in the Western Balkans.
Key discussions focused on incorporating regional perspectives into European climate and energy policy, especially regarding decarbonization and cross-border collaboration. Participants collaboratively developed research questions to guide future modelling efforts, addressing regional challenges and priorities.
The workshop underscored the critical importance of customized climate and energy models in guiding the Western Balkans toward a sustainable, low-carbon future. Furthermore, it stressed the importance of research-driven policy frameworks and international cooperation in pursuing long-term sustainability objectives.
